-Commission work for Dundee design festival 2024
I'm honor to have been invited to make a special piece for Dundee design festival!
For this piece, I mixed soil from Japan, which they visited with soil from Scotland, their homeland, where they embarked on their journey. I aimed to capture the moment when these soils from different origins blend together as they spin, and designed and created the piece with this concept in mind.
As I reflected on the courageous journeys of two women in an era without the internet or airplanes, I became more aware of the enduring distances between countries, cultural differences, and the ongoing reality of conflict, even in our modern, technologically advanced world. I also infused this work with a wish for a world where we can embrace our differences.
Using soil from Scotland and my distant homeland, the creation process felt as if I was taking a journey within my hands.
This project introduced me to various designers and artists in Scotland who are dedicated to creating environmentally conscious works. I would like to express my gratitude to Stacy Hunter, the curator, and the entire UNESCO City of Design Dundee team, as well as all those involved.

■Dundee Design Festival
Running from 23–29 September 2024, Dundee Design Festival’s programme, now revealed, includes free activities, exhibitions and talks featuring the work of over 180 designers all under one roof in 10,000 sqm of Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc.
Scotland’s biggest festival of contemporary design – celebrating the 10 year designation of Dundee as a UNESCO City of Design – will showcase new and existing designs in furniture, interiors, jewellery, homewares, craft, graphic design and apparel in a series of exhibitions and installations aligning with the festival theme Multiplicity.

Dundee Design Festival 2024のためにBookendをデザインしました📚
スコットランド拠点のアーティスト、デザイナー20人が選抜され一点ものBookendを制作するプロジェクトで、作家全員には1894年にダンディから世界へ船で旅立った女性記者Bessie MaxwellとMarie Imandtの旅行記がテーマとして渡されました。
作品には2人が訪れた日本と2人が旅立った出身地スコットランドの土を混ぜ、産地が違う土が輪となり回転しながら混ざり合っていく瞬間をキャプチャーできたらと考えデザイン、制作しました。
インターネットや飛行機がない時代の2人の女性の勇敢な航海に思いを馳せながら、文明が発達した今も変わることのない国と国との距離や文化の違い、そして争いの絶えない現実にも改めて意識をおき、違いを受け入れることができる世の中にして行きたいという願いも込めました。
スコットランドで採土した土と遠く離れた母国の土を使うことで、まるで手の中で旅をしているかのような制作期間でもありました。
このプロジェクトはスコットランドを拠点とする環境に配慮した作品を作る様々なデザイナーやアーティストを知るきっかけとなりました。キュレーターのStacy Hunter氏はじめとするその他UNESCO city of Design Dundeeチームの皆様、関係者の皆様に感謝を申し上げます。
