About
Akiko Matsuda is ceramic artist from Kanagawa, Japan. Born in 1991,
She studied at Tama Art University in Tokyo and majored in ceramics.
After graduation, Akiko has also maintained solo and group exhibitions throughout her budding career with notable exhibits being La Gallarie in London in 2014 and Itochu Art Square Aoyama in Tokyo in 2015. In 2017, she set up her own pottery studio called ‘Akopottery’ in Tokyo after a growing number of commissions from musicians, designers and hair salon clients.
In 2018, she decided to uproot herself to London where she was offered a ceramic resident artist/teacher position as a London-based ceramics studio
During this time, she became deeply involved in ceramic education, leading workshops and courses at various studios while also creating and exhibiting her own work. Until 2023, she expanded her career as a ceramic artist in London.
In 2023, she relocated to Scotland with her little family, after setting up a studio space in the Angus region and began working in earnest, experimenting with wood kilns and local materials, she's currently based in Edinburgh, about to open her new studio space in Leith.
She’s passionate about uncovering new faces of ceramics and exploring the wisdom that clay has to offer, whilst showing deep respect for the longevity and legacy of a medium that can preserve and reflect both artistic and cultural ideas for thousands of years into the future.
